Star Trek - Review

I am going to attempt to make this review as spoiler-free as possible, though if it appears in trailers, it may be mentioned here.

This is the 11th Star Trek movie, and in many ways, a reboot. It takes us back to the earliest days of the Starfleet careers of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. The movie starts on the day of Kirk's birth, where he is literally born into an enviroment of excitement and action. The ship is father serves on, and his mother lives on, is under attack. Kirk, true to his nature, arrives even as the ship is over-whelmed. If I go too much more into it, I will really be getting into big spoilers.

The movie is really enjoyable, even if you're not a 'Trekkie'. It has a lot of actions, explosions, and enough hotness to keep anybody watching. For you Trekkies out there who, like me, are worried about the... Inconsistancies we keep hearing about, let me just say this: All of the changes to the history of Star Trek are explained during the movie. Every. Last. One. You just have to pay attention. While they do explain everything, they don't really highlight it, and they don't beat you over the head with it.

So, that said, let me go through the cast. I'm not going to go into great detail on every cast member, but I will list the bridge crew.

Kirk - Chris Pine: Pine is a relative unknown. About the only thing that he has done that I knew of was Smoking Aces. He has recently been listed as the leading choice for Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern movie.

I think he nails the role. He's fun, adventurous, and likes to destroy stuff. Granted, he's not the 'Shatner' Kirk, but by the end of the movie, he's well on the way. And no, he. Never. Talks. In. One. Word. Sent. Ances. Still, he does have sex with a green woman, so I guess 1 out of 2 isn't bad.

Spock - Zachary Quinto: Quinto is best known for his role as Sylar in Heroes. He's done other stuff, but it was primarily single episode stuff.

He was actually one of my big concerns coming into the movie. The only role I had ever seen him in was Sylar, who is pretty much all rage and anger. You really can't get much different from Spock than Sylar. After seeing the movie, though, I have to admit that I have been turned around on him.

Now, keep in mind that he is still not Leonard Nimoy's spock. Quinto's Spock is younger, still trying to find the balance seen in Nimoy's Spock has in the Original Series. Basically, he's unsure of himself and his place in the universe. He suited the role of Spock for this movie perfectly. I can only hope that he evolves into the Spock needed for the sequel.

Leonard Nimoy is also in the movie as 'Spock Prime'. Best of all, his appearance is actually a vital part of the plot and not just a 'Hey, let's throw in a popular actor from the original series in as a cameo so he can help sell the movie' thing.

Of course, it also backfires just a bit. It puts the Quinto Spock up against the Nimoy Spock. Let's face it, it wouldn't matter who was playing Spock when placed against Nimoy's Spock, they will look bad.

Leonard 'Bones' McCoy - Karl Urban: Karl Urban has been in a couple of movies in the past. You might have heard of them: Lord of the Rings (Two Towers and Return of the King), Chronicles of Riddick, and The Bourne Supremacy. He's done quite a bit more stuff that those, but I figured those are most likely to catch your attention.

My only complaint is not about Karl's portryal of Bones, but more of a writing issue. The 'cliche' Bones lines are used way too much. "He's dead, Jim." "Damn it, Jim! I'm a doctor, not a..." That said, he did have one of my favourite lines in the entire movie. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but it's the reason he give Kirk for joining Starfleet when he clearly dislikes pretty much everything about it. Other than the over-usage of the 'Bones-isms' (I just thought of that. Can I copyright it?), Urban is basically a perfect younger version of DeForest Kelly's McCoy.

Nyota Uhura - Zoe Saldana: Zoe, like Pine, is fairly unknown, at least among my friends. She has done tones of things, but mostly stuff like 'Get Over It', which holds no interest for me. The only thing that I have seen her in was Vantage Point. Either way, she will get a lot more attention now. And she deserves it.

Zoe is extremely likable as Uhura. I don't remember Nichelle Nichols' Uhura being quite so sexual, but I really don't complain. For the old-school Trekkies, there is a bonus. There is a relationship that was hinted at in TOS that is not so subtle here. So, if you know the episode I'm talking about, Sorry. At least it's a minour spoiler, right?

Right?

Montgomery "Scotty" Scott - Simon Pegg: If you're a fan of British Comedys, you probably know who Simon Pegg is. Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. If you haven't seen these yet, do yourself a favour and rent them.

Scotty doesn't actually appear in most of the movie. Pegg's timing and execution is perfect for what of the movie he is in. I truly hope that Pegg reprises his role in the inevitable sequel. I hate to give him such a small section, he was so good in the role, but he wasn't really in the movie much.

Hikaru Sulu - John Cho: John Cho has done a number of things. A couple Harold & Kumar movies, Ugly Betty, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and so on. Okay, I admit that I have only seen the Harold & Kumar movies, but those others are popular enough that he should be fairly well known.

Pavlov Chechov - Anton Velchin: Anton is not new to Hollywood, but most of his stuff has been a couple episodes here or there. He did do 3 seasons of Huff.
